At Krav Maga Swindon, we believe real-world self-defence isn’t just about physical skills — it’s about understanding the legal and ethical boundaries of protecting yourself and others.

Violence

Violence is the illegal or unjustified use of force that causes harm without lawful reason. It’s a reaction driven by aggression, ego, or intent to hurt — not protection. Violence can lead to criminal charges and serious consequences.

Force

Force, in contrast, is lawful and justified when used to defend yourself or someone else from immediate danger. In the eyes of the law, force becomes acceptable the moment it is necessary and proportionate to the threat faced.

How Force Is Justified

When Force Is Justified

Force is considered justified when it is used to protect yourself or another person from an immediate and unlawful threat. Any action taken in self-defence must meet two key legal principles: necessity and proportionality.

Necessity means that force is used only when there is no reasonable alternative to prevent harm. The decision to act is based on what is genuinely believed at the time, under pressure, and in rapidly changing circumstances.

Proportionality means the level of force used must match the seriousness of the threat faced. The response should be enough to stop the danger and allow escape or safety, not to punish or seek revenge once the threat has ended.

Together, these principles ensure that use of force remains lawful, and disciplined. Understanding this distinction is essential to effective self-protection and is a core principle of Krav Maga training.
